Our Craft
Three things go into every Meew lamp: the material, the design and the making.
1. The material
Meew lamps are printed in two materials, each chosen for what it does with light.
Meew BioPolymer is plant-based, made from plant sugars such as corn and sugarcane. It has a soft matte finish, a little like unglazed ceramic, and when the lamp is on it softens the bulb’s light into a low, even glow.
Some designs need the light to come through more clearly. Those are printed in a translucent co-polyester, which is tougher and clearer, so the glow shows through every layer.

2. The design
Every lamp starts on my screen. Most ideas begin with something I’ve noticed in nature, or in the buildings and objects around me.
I design with parametric modelling. Instead of drawing one fixed shape, I set up the rules behind it, like how deep a rib runs or how a pattern wraps around the form. Then I adjust them until the shape feels right and the light falls the way I want.
Each design goes through many versions, on screen and on the printer, before it’s ready to sell.

3. The making
Nothing is printed in advance. When you order, your lamp is printed for you, one at a time, layer by layer. A single lamp can spend a whole day on the printer.
Look closely and you’ll see fine lines running around the surface, one for every layer. They stay on purpose. They give the lamp a soft, almost fabric-like texture and catch the light when it’s on. Small differences from one lamp to the next are part of the process, not flaws.
Every lamp is then trimmed, checked and assembled by hand in Kuala Lumpur, and comes with a warm amber bulb, ready to switch on the day it arrives.
